Evaluate Your Communication

By Gail Solish, Personal/Executive Coach

Did you know that June is Effective Communication Month?  How well you speak and listen to people greatly impacts the outcome of your relationships.  So often communication style depends on your personality and that of the person with whom you are interacting.  The way that you convey your message and your willingness to listen speaks volumes about how others will perceive you.

Take the opportunity to evaluate your communication abilities by answering the following questions.

1. I communicate effectively with my significant other.
Always Frequently Rarely Never
2. Communication with my children is generally satisfactory.
Always Frequently Rarely Never
3. When I speak with my parents, the conversation generally goes well.
Always Frequently Rarely Never
4. I communicate effectively with my siblings.
Always Frequently Rarely Never
5. I communicate effectively with my boss.
Always Frequently Rarely Never
6. My colleagues would say that I communicate effectively with them.
Always Frequently Rarely Never
7. I communicate well with the people I manage or supervise.
Always Frequently Rarely Never
8. I speak well with support staff.
Always Frequently Rarely Never
9. I communicate well on the phone.
Always Frequently Rarely Never
10. I am comfortable communicating via email.
Always Frequently Rarely Never

Now reflect on how you have answered.  What areas are strengths and where do you need to improve?  What steps will you take to make changes and how will you track the impact?  So often we set goals but don’t take the time to write them down and create time lines, therefore they fall off the radar.  If you would like support to expand your communication skills, please contact me for a complimentary coaching session.
